Precision Botox for TMD: Using Muscle Activity Testing (EMG) to Guide Diagnosis, Dosing, and Injection Timing

About this Seminar

Botulinum toxin ("Botox") is now a widely used treatment for TMD and craniofacial pain — but most dentists still treat it as a one-size-fits-all injection rather than a data-guided therapy. This course introduces EMG (electromyography), a simple, non-invasive test that measures the electrical activity of muscles, and shows how it can transform the way you diagnose and treat TMD patients. Dr. Roberts will demonstrate how EMG readings help pinpoint which muscles are actually contributing to a patient's pain, determine the right dose, and identify the optimal time to inject. He will close with a live injection demonstration of a technique designed to minimize negative side effects.

Learning Objectives:
1. Explain what EMG is and how it measures the electrical activity of skeletal muscles to reveal nerve dysfunction, muscle dysfunction, or problems with nerve-to-muscle signal transmission.
2. Describe how EMG findings guide diagnosis, dosage, and injection site selection when using botulinum toxin to treat TMD, bruxism, and headaches.
3. Apply EMG data to determine optimal re-injection timing, maintain a pain-free state, and reduce the risk of relapse.

About Dr. Warren Roberts

Co-founder & Clinical Director, PTIFAT

Dr. Warren Roberts is a general dentist who has been in practice in Vancouver, BC for 40+ years. After attending several botulinum toxin and facial rejuvenation training programs earlier in his career, Dr. Roberts was concerned with the level of training that was being provided in this field. To be an exceptional practitioner with no negative side effects, Dr. Roberts believes you need not only a deep level of understanding of head and neck anatomy, but also a deep understanding of specific practices and injection techniques that make the patient experience remarkable. The result was the development of PTIFA – a training institute that provides an unprecedented depth of clinical theory, hands-on teaching and practice integration (including team training modules) in the field of facial rejuvenation (botulinum toxin, fillers, lasers, and more).
